Secondary Design and Technology builds on the skills and knowledge pupils have already learned at primary school. However, at its core is creativity and imagination.
Students learn to design and make products that solve genuine, relevant problems within different contexts whilst considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. To do this effectively, they will acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on additional disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art.

What will I learn?

In Year 8, students complete one unit each of product design and food technology. Each unit consists of a group activity to engage students in planning, design, teamwork and evaluation. We also offer after-school Cooking Club for Years 7 & 8 as part of the enrichment programme at Magna.
In Years 9-11, students are offered a choice of 2 BTEC Firsts: BTEC Hospitality and Catering; BTEC Engineering.
BTECs are vocationally-related qualifications, where learners develop knowledge and understanding by applying their learning and skills in a work-related context.
During the course, students complete 3 units of coursework and one core exam unit which is externally assessed and worth 25% of the overall grade.

What will I do?

BTEC students develop their knowledge and understanding by applying their learning and skills in a work-related context. The teaching team creates a series of assignments, which can be written or activity based. The format of the assignments varies to suit the needs of the subject area. BTEC First assignments offer students the opportunity to demonstrate their learning in a real-life context.
Students work on assignments in a variety of ways; some they complete on their own and, for others, they work as part of a team.

What is the expectation of homework?

In Year 8 we do not set formal homework tasks.
In Years 9-11 no formal homework is set. Students are required to meet deadlines throughout the course and may need to complete work outside of lesson time to ensure these deadlines are not missed.

What support and guidance will I be given?

There are many different types of support on offer to students from the Technology department; students are offered a lot of personalised support during lessons. Other support is offered to students through Raising Attainment sessions after school, weekends and holidays.

How will I be assessed?

There is no assessment in Year 8.
In Years 9-11 students will be assessed throughout the course but not to a set timetable due to the combination of practical and coursework elements.
