Magna Academy is fully committed to safeguarding its students and has an ongoing culture of vigilance. Through their day-to-day contact with students and direct work with families, staff at the academy have a crucial role to play in noticing indicators of possible abuse or neglect and referring them to Children’s Social Care.
Domestic Abuse
Magna Academy receives information from the police to alert the Designated Safeguarding Lead in the academy when there has been an incident of domestic abuse in a household where a student lives. This is the procedure where Police forces are part of Operation Encompass. The information shared allows us to monitor and support the student. If we have additional concerns we will discuss the need for further safeguarding actions with Social Care.
This information would only be shared with other staff on a restricted need to know basis i.e. those who are immediately responsible for the student’s welfare such as the class teacher. Where a Multi-agency risk assessment conference (MARAC) occurs the academy may be asked for information and appropriate academy related information may be shared with the academy after the meeting.
Attendance
Knowing where students are during academy hours is an extremely important aspect of Safeguarding. Missing from the academy can be an indicator of abuse and neglect and may also raise concerns about other safeguarding issues, including the criminal exploitation of children.
We monitor attendance carefully and address poor or irregular attendance without delay. We will always follow up with parents/carers when students are not at academy.
This means we need to have a least two up to date contact numbers for parents/carers. Parents should be reminded to update the academy as soon as possible if the numbers change.
