Yesterday, eight students from Year 7 represented Magna Academy at the PEDSSA round of the ESFA U-12 Indoor 5-A-Side tournament hosted at Canford School.
In Round 1 of the tournament, Magna battled out an enthralling 4-4 draw with Broadstone Middle School but lost games against St Edwards, St Michaels and Poole Grammar.
Highlights of this group section included Harry Tregaskas saving two well-taken penalties, Arthur Nicholls and debutant Umeyr Yetim setting high standards in defence and Jayden Rose showing outstanding finishing instincts to score 7 out of the 8 goals scored by Magna in this round, with Sam Byrne adding the other.
Following the Round 1 results, Magna were entered into the ‘supplementary cup’.
In the first game against Broadstone, Magna led 2-0 and 3-2 before being agonisingly pegged back in the last minute to draw 3-3 (meaning a crazy 7-7 aggregate score over two games for these teams!). A special mention goes out to man of the match Harry Tregaskas, whose excellent saves played a big part in keeping Broadstone at arms length.
Magna managed to secure a winning finish to the day though, beating Cranborne 4-1.
Alex Cockwell opened the scoring with a wonderful tackle and finish from long range. A sublime hat trick from Magna top goalscorer Jayden Rose (11 in total) and a tight defensive display saw GK’s Harry Tregaskas and Harry McNeil keep the goals out, securing Magna’s first win of the day.
It was evident that Magna had grew with confidence as the day went on.
The 3-3 draw and 4-1 win poached Supplementary Cup glory for Magna Academy, a tremendous achievement for first time participants!
Huge credit goes to all 8 players who all played their part in this success, playing with great desire and smiles on their faces all day long. Captain Aidan Curry summarised the day by saying:
“We played some good football today, but we are definitely capable of even better. We are glad to bring back some success at last!”.
Well done to each and every one of you.
