On Thursday 3rd July, 12 of Magna Academy’s top-performing Year 10 female science students enjoyed an exciting and educational visit to Bournemouth University. Accompanied by Mr Barrett, the day began with a detailed tour of the Talbot Campus led by Jess, a Biological Sciences graduate and student ambassador.

Students explored the Forensic Science Department, where they observed simulated crime scenes and got hands-on with blood spatter analysisfingerprinting, and evidence preservation techniques. They then stepped into the modern teaching lab for a session on gel electrophoresis, where they practised using micropipettes to load DNA samples into agarose gel wells — gaining real insight into molecular biology techniques.

The group also visited the Tissue Culture and Analytical Chemistry labs, getting a glimpse into the cutting-edge science happening at university level. The visit concluded with a relaxing lunch on the Fusion Building balcony, where students had the chance to quiz Jess about student life and the exciting pathways a science education can offer.

The students represented Magna Academy brilliantly, showing curiosity, enthusiasm, and impeccable behaviour throughout the day. A fantastic experience that has undoubtedly inspired some future scientists!
