On Tuesday 8th July, 16 of our Year 12 Science and Maths students set off bright and early from Magna Academy, travelling by minibus with Mr Tucker and Mr Barrett to We The Curious in Bristol for an exciting day of university-level genetics.

Led by expert demonstrator Penny, students explored their own genetics by testing for the PTC gene — a gene linked to the ability to taste bitter compounds found in brassicas like broccoli. They extracted their own DNA, used PCR (polymerase chain reaction) to amplify it, and then applied restriction enzymes to target a SNP site specific to PTC-tasters.

After an engaging debate on the ethics of gene therapy, students used gel electrophoresis to separate their DNA fragments and identify their own PTC genotype — a fantastic hands-on experience that brought molecular biology to life.

Following a nearly 12-hour round trip, students returned to Dorset tired but inspired. They were a credit to the academy throughout the day, showing enthusiasm, maturity, and a real passion for science.
